On March 19, 1945, Lieutenant (junior grade) Donald A. Gary was below decks aboard USS Franklin when two enemy bombs turned the aircraft carrier into an inferno.

Franklin was operating near the Japanese home islands when the attack ignited fuel, bombs, rockets, and ammunition. Explosions tore through the ship. Fire spread across the flight and hangar decks. Smoke poured into the compartments below.

Gary, an engineering officer, was on the third deck with roughly 300 Sailors trapped in a messing compartment. The passageways around them were dark, flooded, choked with smoke, and blocked by twisted wreckage. There was no apparent way out.

Gary told the men he would find one.

Using oxygen-breathing equipment, he moved into the darkness. He groped through damaged passageways and searched again after failed attempts. At last, he found a route through the ship to safety.

He had escaped.

Then he went back.

Gary obtained another breathing apparatus and returned through the smoke three times. On each trip, he reached the trapped compartment and led another group of Sailors through fire, rising water, shattered steel, and the continuing threat of explosions.

He kept returning until the last men had been brought out.

But Gary’s work was not finished. He organized and led firefighting parties into the burning hangar deck. When damage left the first two firerooms unusable, he entered the third and directed the effort to raise steam in a boiler—helping restore power to a carrier that had seemed beyond saving.

Franklin became the most heavily damaged American carrier of World War II to survive. After brief assistance from towing ships, she moved under her own power and ultimately reached New York.

Donald Gary received the Medal of Honor for the courage that saved hundreds of lives.
