On February 17, 1945, two Navy divers disappeared beneath the surface of West Loch at Pearl Harbor to tunnel under a sunken landing ship.
They were working in 40 feet of water and 20 feet of mud, using jet nozzles to cut a passage beneath the buried hulk. Then the wreckage shifted.
Steel and mud collapsed into the tunnel.
Both men were trapped.
Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Owen F. P. Hammerberg understood exactly what waited below. Another cave-in could close the passage completely. His lifeline could snag on jagged steel. The mud could move without warning, turning the wreck into a maze with no light and no room to escape.
Hammerberg went down anyway.
He forced a passage through the original excavation and reached the first diver. Working in pitch-black water, Hammerberg freed the man from the steel wreckage. Then he fought through the diver’s fouled lines until the trapped Sailor could reach the surface.
One man was safe.
One was still below.
Hammerberg had already spent hours laboring inside the unstable wreck, but he turned back into the mud and steel. He pressed farther beneath the sunken ship, washing a route toward the second diver.
Then the wreckage collapsed again.
A heavy piece of steel pinned Hammerberg across the other man. The position that trapped him also shielded the diver beneath him from further injury.
The two Sailors Hammerberg entered the wreck to save survived. Hammerberg did not. He died after an 18-hour rescue effort.
For his actions, Owen Hammerberg received the Medal of Honor posthumously. The Navy later named the destroyer escort USS Hammerberg in his honor.
His courage was not performed in daylight or before witnesses. It unfolded in darkness, beneath a wreck, where professional skill mattered as much as physical bravery. He knew the hazards because he was trained to understand them—and he entered because two shipmates had no other way out.
Tenacity is bringing one person home, knowing another is still trapped, and going farther into the wreckage. It is turning your own body into the final layer of protection when the steel moves again.
This.... is what Tenacity Is.
