On September 4, 1967, Marines of 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines were fighting for survival in Quang Tin Province, South Vietnam.
Reports reached the command post that the 2nd Platoon of Company M was in danger of being overrun.
Navy Chaplain Lieutenant Vincent R. Capodanno could have remained behind the line.
He ran toward the platoon.
Capodanno crossed an open area swept by small-arms, automatic-weapons, and mortar fire. He carried no weapon. His mission was the men.
Moving across the battlefield, he administered last rites to the dying and gave medical aid to the wounded. Marines knew him as the “Grunt Padre” because he shared their hardships and went where they went. On this day, that meant moving from casualty to casualty while the position threatened to collapse around them.
Then a mortar round exploded nearby.
Fragments struck his arms and legs. Part of his right hand was severed.
Capodanno refused medical aid.
Instead, he directed the corpsmen to care for wounded Marines who needed them more. Then he continued across the battlefield—encouraging the men, comforting the dying, and helping the injured while carrying wounds that should have ended his mission.
Near the fighting, Capodanno saw a wounded Navy corpsman trapped in the direct line of fire from an enemy machine gun positioned about fifteen yards away.
The chaplain moved toward him.
He came within inches of reaching the corpsman before a burst of machine-gun fire killed him.
Capodanno’s sacrifice did not end with the battle. The Marines he served carried his example forward. On January 7, 1969, his family received the Medal of Honor on his behalf. The Navy later named USS Capodanno in his honor.
His courage was not measured by distance gained or ground taken. It was measured by the space between safety and a wounded Marine—and his decision, again and again, to cross it.
Tenacity is leaving cover when others need comfort. It is refusing care so the corpsmen can reach someone else. It is moving toward the wounded even after you have become one of them.
This.... is what Tenacity Is.
