In the early hours of March 27, 1953, Hospital Corpsman Third Class William R. Charette was serving with a Marine rifle company at Outpost Vegas in Korea.

The position was far ahead of the main defensive line. Enemy troops were entrenched around the contested hill, and the night erupted under mortar and small-arms fire.

Charette’s weapon was medical aid—and the wounded were scattered across the battlefield.

He moved toward them.

Again and again, Charette crossed exposed ground to reach injured Marines. While he was treating one of them, an enemy grenade landed only feet away.

There was no time to move the wounded man.

Charette threw himself over him.

The explosion ripped away Charette’s helmet and medical kit and knocked him unconscious. When he came to, his equipment was gone and he had wounds of his own. The need around him had not changed.

So he improvised.

He tore pieces from his uniform to make bandages. When he found a Marine whose protective vest had been destroyed, Charette removed his own armor and placed it over the wounded man.

Then the evacuation route reached a section of trench that had collapsed. To move the casualties across it, Charette stood upright—fully exposed to enemy fire—and helped lift wounded Marines over the obstruction toward safety.

He kept working until the men who needed him had been treated and moved.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower presented Charette the Medal of Honor on January 12, 1954. He later continued his Navy career in the submarine force and retired as a master chief hospital corpsman after 26 years of service.

Charette’s story reveals a form of courage that carries no distance from danger. The corpsman cannot wait behind the line for suffering to arrive. He must cross the line himself.
