More than thirty enemy ships were hiding inside a harbor along the coast of China.
They were protected by shallow water, mines, rocks, an escort screen, and one powerful assumption: no American submarine commander would be reckless enough to follow them inside.
Commander Eugene “Lucky” Fluckey saw the same obstacles.
He also saw an opportunity.
On January 23, 1945, Fluckey brought USS Barb toward the harbor entrance. The water was dangerously shallow. The charts were incomplete. A safe escape would require a full hour at maximum speed through a narrow path filled with hazards.
Before ordering the attack, Fluckey worked backward. He studied the shoreline and noticed navigational markers that suggested a possible route through the treacherous water. He calculated the approach, the firing position, and the path home.
Then he gave the order:
Battle stations. Torpedoes.
Barb charged into the anchorage in water so shallow that there was scarcely enough depth to conceal a submarine. Fluckey maneuvered through the enemy screen, brought his torpedo tubes to bear, and fired into the packed formation.
Eight direct hits tore into six major targets. An ammunition ship erupted, sending fire, shells, and debris across the harbor.
Now every second mattered.
Fluckey ordered full speed.
With enemy forces reacting behind them, Barb raced through uncharted, mined, and rock-obstructed water. The crew had no comfortable margin for error—only the route their commander had recognized before the first torpedo was fired.
They made it out.
Eugene Fluckey received the Medal of Honor for that patrol. By the end of World War II, he had also earned four Navy Crosses, making him one of the most highly decorated officers in United States Navy history.
But the lesson of that night was larger than any medal.
