By April 1945, the Pacific war had taught every submariner the same brutal lesson: survival depended on silence, distance, and the ability to disappear.
Lieutenant Commander George L. Street III chose a different course.
On the night of April 14, Street guided USS Tirante toward the enemy anchorage at Quelpart Island—known today as Jeju Island. Between his submarine and its target lay mined water, dangerous shoals, patrolling vessels, hostile aircraft, and five shore-based radar stations.
The safe decision was to remain in deeper water.
Street went in.
With Tirante running on the surface and her crew at battle stations, he brought the submarine deep inside the restricted harbor. The shoreline was barely more than a thousand yards away. There was little water beneath the keel and almost no room to maneuver. If the enemy found them, there would be no easy dive into the safety of the deep.
Ahead sat a large Japanese ammunition ship.
Street closed the distance and fired two torpedoes.
Both struck.
The night vanished in a towering blast of white flame. The explosion illuminated the harbor, exposed Tirante’s position, and turned a silent attack into a race for survival. Enemy patrol vessels began closing in. Shore defenses came alive.
Street did not panic. He did not hesitate.
He turned his submarine toward open water and led his crew back through the same mined, rock-obstructed approach that should have made the attack impossible in the first place. Only after clearing the coastline did Tirante finally slip beneath the surface.
Street had taken his submarine where the enemy believed no American commander would dare to go, struck at the heart of a defended anchorage, and brought his crew home.
For his actions that night, George Street received the Medal of Honor.
